General Dynamics Electric Boat to Christen Submarine Idaho (SSN 799) GROTON, Conn. (March 15, 2024) - General Dynamics Electric Boat will christen the Virginia-class submarine Idaho (SSN 799) March 16 at its shipyard in Groton, Conn. Electric Boat is a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD). The relationship between a ship's sponsor and crew endures throughout the lifetime of the boat. Terry Stackley, who has a life-long relationship with the U.S. Navy, will serve as the ship's sponsor. She will break a bottle of sparkling water from Idaho's rivers, streams and lakes on the ship's hull to commemorate the christening. "I couldn't be more honored to be the sponsor of the USS Idaho, with its enduring connection to the great state of Idaho," said Terry Stackley. "I am also proud to be associated with its hardworking and dedicated crew." "The christening ceremony also provides the opportunity to salute the thousands of people who work hard in support of the Virginia-class submarine program," said Kevin Graney, president of General Dynamics Electric Boat. "I am proud of Electric Boat's shipbuilders, and the skills, capabilities and commitment they bring to their work every day, resulting in magnificent submarines like PCU Idaho. This year, we're celebrating Electric Boat's 125th anniversary and our company's legacy of innovation that spans three centuries. We are committed to helping the U.S. Navy outpace our adversaries and ensure our nation's continued dominance in the undersea domain." The christening will take place in the shipyard's Virginia-class assembly building in front of an audience of approximately 4,000 people, including Electric Boat shipbuilders, members of the ship's crew, U.S. Navy personnel and government officials. The event will be viewed live at numerous watch parties across the state of Idaho. The keynote address will be delivered by Nickolas H. Guertin, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Research, Development and Acquisition. Idaho is the 26th submarine in the Virginia class, designed for the full range of 21st-century mission requirements, including anti-submarine and surface ship warfare and special operations support. Electric Boat and its partner Newport News Shipbuilding share construction of the Virginia class in a teaming agreement. Idaho is the 13th submarine in the class to be delivered by Electric Boat. The submarine will be the fourth U.S. Navy warship to carry the name Idaho and the first U.S. Navy submarine. In 1952, construction began on the world's first operational nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut. From 1953 to 1995, over 40,000 sailors visited Idaho for training before being assigned to nuclear-powered ships.
