Working closely with the U.S. Navy, Electric Boat is committed to helping keep the nation's nuclear submarine fleet maintained and mission-ready by providing a full range of maintenance, modernization and life-cycle support activities. Hundreds of EB employees are regularly engaged in this work at various locations across the United States. The company performs the bulk of its maintenance and modernization work at its Groton, Conn., shipyard and at the Naval Submarine Base - New London, Conn. At the shipyard, Electric Boat provides management and trade support to a number of jobs, both in a lead role and in support of Navy-led activities. At the submarine base, Electric Boat is under contract to operate the Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department and the floating drydock Shippingport (ARDM 4), and the company also provides supervisory and trade support to the Naval Submarine Support Facility. In addition to these and other specific maintenance activities in Groton, Electric Boat maintains permanent facilities at Kings Bay, Ga., and Bangor, Wash., to support the routine life-cycle requirements of the Ohio-class submarines based there. The company has also established on-site teams at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va., and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash., to convert the four oldest Ohio-class submarines to an SSGN configuration, multi-mission submarines optimized for covert strike and special operations warfare (See the Programs - SSGN page for more information). Additionally, Electric Boat regularly supports submarine maintenance jobs at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine. |
